Shoplifting with a stroller is a common practice. Less common is the case of 24 year old Reginald Wilson who abandoned his baby along with a stroller full of stolen goods when confronted by police on January 25th. Reginald is out on parole and is now wanted for multiple warrants. Reginald's willingness to abandon his own child should serve as a reminder to retailers how desperate shoplifters can be. The deterrence provided by a visible security tag system can save employees the grief of having to deal with shoplifters by stopping shoplifting before it happens.

Maryland Man Shoplifts Steaks...

Gregory M. Veney of Lexington Park Maryland was planning one heck of a BBQ when he was arrested for shoplifting eight steaks, the cut is unknown. Authorities are not sure if Veney is a rib-eye or fillet man. County Sheriffs arrested Veney for shoplifting after the manager of a food lion grocery store reported the theft and Gregory was subsequently discovered to be in possession of the eight steaks. There are more and more reports of shoplifters being apprehended after being tasered. Arlington heights police arrested a female shoplifter after using a taser to apprehend the thief on 10/28/10. The shoplifting took place at a Kohl's department store. Store security attempted to stop the shoplifter but where fought off. Eventually the paramedics were brought in to remove the electric probes from the perpetrators body so she could be safely transferred to police headquarters. Police attempted to taser a shoplifter on 10/12/10 in Pittsfield MI. They missed the target but were lucky enough to apprehend the criminal hiding in the bushes. On 10/3/10 a man was tasered outside of a Walmart after being detained by store security but resisting the arresting police officer.

A large portion of shoplifters are caught stealing items that will yield no financial reward. Many items are stolen and then simply discarded. The reason for this is that many shoplifters do it for the thrill or compulsion. Winona Ryder is just one famous name that comes to mind. Candy is one of the most shoplifted product categories yet it is affordable to everyone. People will steal things that they would not buy just because those items are easily stolen.

An infamous and cunning shoplifter that has been jailed for over 20 Months is pending release later this year. The so called "Millionaire Shoplifter" Kevin Castle is soon to be able to resume his role as the scourge of London retail stores. Kevin earned his moniker by frequenting the London Ritz hotel clad in Versache, Armani, and Louis Vouton. After a day of shoplifting Castle could be seen driving on Piccadilly in a rented Porsche Cayenne, where he would pull up to Rivoli Bar and rub elbows with the aristocracy. UK retailers have long embraced anti shoplifting methods, but the release of this repeat offender should serve as a warning to shop owners worldwide. Shoplifters abound. They are of varying ages, creeds, backgrounds, and social class. Many shoplifters are caught time and again, yet are released to haunt our businesses. Retail security must be given the priority postion it deserves in order for a business to survive. Let's hope that if Mr. Castle attempts to steal again a security tag brings him to justice. If your shop does not have an electronic article surveillance system, there is a good chance the "Millionaire Shoplifter" will be having his next Tom Collins on you.

An Oklahoma City woman was sentenced to life in prison for shoplifting two purses from Dillards according to the Oklahoman Newspaper. Cecilia Cathleen Rodriguez was the unfortunate recipient of a life long prison sentence on March 20th for shoplifting. Cecilia is a heroin addict with a litany of arrests for theft related crimes dating back to at least 1971. The Judge in this purse shoplifting case was so moved by Ms. Rodriguez’s record that he decided “she needs to be warehoused for…life”. He went on to say that Cecilia is a “one person crime wave”.

Many signs in the retail security loss prevention world indicate that the economy may be looking up. Major retailers are still looking to open stores in 2010. While many box stores both small and large pushed off plans for average growth in 2009, the same is not holding true for 2010 at this point. Many national retailers are sticking to their guns and following through on store openings planned for next year. Oddly enough some banks, which are at the center of the global financial crisis, are finding themselves unable to turn away from long term leases at these price levels. With desirable high traffic neighbors like TD bank staying on track to open in local centers many retailers are unwilling to give up what will be prime locations in a better economy. It seems that retailers with any financial wherewithal are betting on the future. Let’s hope that retail can find its footing in 2009 and resume upward movement in 2010.

Shoplifters come in all colors, religious backgrounds, genders, etc... They are not young or old. Shoplifters are a frighteningly large group of people that are as diverse as the United States itself. Why is this so important to discuss? Take the case of 86 year old, Ella Orko. She was recently arrested for shoplifting cosmetics, salmon, batteries and instant coffee. The items were discovered on her person, stuffed in her pants. She has been arrested at least 61 times dating back to 1956. Ella served two days in a Chicago jail for her latest theft. The morale of the story is this, security tags do not discriminate and neither should retailers. If a person is old, young, dressed well, or scruffy a security tag does not notice. All the tag cares about is keeping merchandise in the store. It alerts the retailer if it is removed from the secured area. If that alarm sounds, a responsible merchant will follow up to discover and question the cause of the alarm. Do not give someone the benefit of the doubt because they seem an improbable thief and conversely do not hassle someone because of the way they look. Rely on your tags and CCTV system to alert you to a shoplifter and be attentive to a shoplifting situation when it arises.

There are 2 Supertag Hand Detachers in the marketplace today. The MK225 and the MK125 are both somewhat reliable supertag detachers. The MK125 has a classic gun shape where the MK225 has more of a Star Trek Phaser thing happening. They both get the job done but the MK225 seems to last longer. Miami led 24-17 in the first overtime, and the Buckeyes faced fourth-and-3 at the Hurricanes' 5. Ohio State quarterback Craig Krenzel threw into the right corner of the end zone for Chris Gamble, but CB Sharpe broke up the pass as the receiver reached back for the football. Miami's players and coaches(even Warren Sapp) ran on the field to celebrate what they thought was the school's sixth national championship. But then field judge Terry Porter(the hated one) threw a flag what seemed to be minutes after Krenzel's incomplete pass hit the turf, and Sharpe was penalized for pass interference. It took officials several minutes to restore order and get the fans off the field. Three plays later, Krenzel dove into the end zone to send the game into a second overtime, in which the Buckeyes won 31-24.

The game depicts an adolescent male in the suburbs who accrues goods and cash by shoplifting from retail stores and fencing the booty. For obvious reasons retailers do not want this shoplifting simulator from being mass released. The feeling is that teens will not only mimic the game but that shoplifters skills will be sharpened much as a flight simulator helps in the training of pilots. If there was one product I would associate with shoplifting more than any other it would have to be a HDTV plasma television. LCD TV's are also popular shoplifting targets. Cane's legend began over 2 millennia ago in the Muldovian countryside. A young girl was fetching water for her fathers herd of sheep. Jack Bauer for those who do not know, is the superhero featured in the fox networks' 24. Jack does not take any crap. Jack does not care about the rules. Jack cares about results. If Jack Bauer was running security in your retail store shoplifting would not be an issue. Jack Bauer would likely torture a shoplifter with in an inch of his or her life in an attempt to determine the full scope of the shoplifting plot. Jack Bauer however is not available for security detail in every store in America. Used sensormatic systems and used checkpoint systems are available in every store. We do not recommend torture but a strong EAS system is advisable. Flat panel televisions are the only way to go for remote monitoring. In an office or a retail store LCD TV and Plasma televisions flat panels make so much sense. Less space taken up by your TV monitor is a good thing. At this stage of the game it is flat panel or bust. CRT TV screens are done. DLP is way to big for the office, even rear projection LCD is to bulky. Rent is high enough without wasting space on your TV or CCTV system.

LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) was at one time expected to challenge LCD, but that thinking is changing. LCoS is said to have production difficulties where as LCD production is now routine, with innovations constantly being made.

If I wanted the tags I had to also buy his mint condition collection of Miss piggy shower curtains. I asked what the emergency to sell the MPC(Miss Piggy Collection) was all about. What I was told will haunt me for the remainder of my days. No it was not a tale of an unprotected retail store with no checkpoint or sensormatic retail security tags. It was much, much worse. It was a story of human depravity. A story frothing with untoward behavior. It was a MPC shower curtain story that your average supertag superhero would run from.

Sensormatic or Checkpoint?

They are both very high quality manufacturers, with reputable product lines. Sensormatic supertags are with out question the best hard tag on the market. Checkpoint 410 labels on the other hand are considered by many to be the best paper tag on the market. Both companies make great systems that fight for dominance. For a 3 foot door drug store I would use a checkpoint QS2000. For a six foot door clothing store I would use a sensormatic ultrapsot. For a 4 foot door CD store I would use either the Checkpoint QS4000 or the Sensormatic Digital Promax.
